The Butterfield Speaks Story: “All the World’s a Stage”

I devoted much of my education to becoming an actor, and I started my career as a theater person. I “pounded the boards” in college productions at Stanford. I earned my master’s degree in acting at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco, and later became Dean of the Conservatory. I enjoyed several years of success as an actor, director, and teacher of theater arts in the Bay Area (and yes, a little bit in Hollywood).

During those years it never occurred to me that the craft I was practicing might be valuable, or even useful, beyond performing Shakespeare and Sondheim.

 

And then one day...

 

A trio of lawyers walked into my office and asked me a simple question: Can you help lawyers succeed, in the courtroom and beyond, by teaching them the skills used in the theater?

And so my journey began...
